Brazil has stood out in the global scenario as the largest commodity producer, especially grain. This was the argument used by a group of South American researchers to bring the 9th International Working Conference on Stored Product Protection for the first time to a South American country. The event, which is held every four years in countries of the five continents, will take place from 15th to 18th October 2006 in Campinas, São Paulo, at the Royal Palm Plaza Hotel.
The main objective of the Conference is to promote interchange in science and technology among several global producing countries. “Traditionally, the conference bring together scientists, researchers, professors, consultants, extension officers, industrialists, service-sector personnel, equipment and pesticide manufacturers, rural producers and storage personnel, all involved in the conservation and quality assurance of several articles, such as grain, malt, fibers, animal ration, dehydrated products and foodstuffs in general”, explains the researcher from the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), linked to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply, Irineu Lorini, pointing out that the last edition of the event brought together participants from over 40 countries.
The storage theme began to stand out in the 1970’s, culminating with the first International Conference on Stored Product Protection, held in Savanna (USA) in 1974. Since then, another seven conferences have been held in the following countries: Nigeria, USA, Israel, France, Australia, China and Great Britain.
The event will, once more, give opportunity for the exchange of experiences, technologies and innovations that stand out in the area of post-harvest. Such innovations include scenarios with scales that vary from rural property to large storage facilities, present in several countries.
On the other hand, the conference seeks to demonstrate the vitality of Brazilian agribusiness. Technical visits to the South and Central-West regions will confirm the quality of the Brazilian agricultural and industrial productive sectors.
